Notice of Sale

I just thought I'd share with you one of the seven fabulous short stories contained in my incredibly unsuccessful book 'God, Aliens, Death & Teapots'.
I know, I'm just too good to you people!!

Notice of Sale

We at Moff, Cavil, Cotto and Associates are delighted to announce a rare opportunity to acquire a traditional, well-maintained planet in the much sought-after Orion Arm region of the Milky Way, with spectacular night-time views across the Equatorial Symmetry Plane.
The planet, current designation ‘Earth’, is ideally situated on the inner edge of the Orion Arm, in a largely unspoilt and undeveloped part of the galaxy, yet still within easy commuting distance of the Galactic Centre.
Formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago from entirely local gaseous matter and dust, Earth is a classical spherical shape (with negligible elliptical distortion) and has an equatorial circumference of 40,000 kilometres. It sits in its own extensive region of space, sufficiently distant from its two nearest neighbours (designations ‘Venus’ and ‘Mars’) to provide total privacy (note – both neighbouring planets are currently uninhabited and not expected to come onto the market within the next century).
Boasting a local G-type ‘yellow dwarf’ main-sequence star with confirmed hydrogen reserves guaranteeing steady and continuous operation for approximately 5.4 billion years, the planet has an average annual temperature of 14.5 oC with extremes of between +57 oC and -90 oC (note – due to recent unregulated carbon dioxide emissions, the planet is likely to experience a minimum rise in average global temperatures of 2 oC within the next 100 years; this may lead to instances of water ingress into some low-lying land-masses).
The planet’s atmosphere, which extends to a height of 100 kilometres, is a mixture of 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon and 0.039% carbon dioxide, with a further number of trace elements and up to 1% water vapour (note – this gaseous configuration can be altered to suit any perspective buyer’s particular atmospheric requirements, though it is recommended that a full Potential Impact Survey is conducted before any major atmospheric changes are undertaken). The planet is also fitted with a reliable magnetic field to prevent damage from solar winds (full maintenance history available on request), an ozone layer (recently repaired) to minimise solar UV radiation levels, and the planet’s Galactic Collision Risk Factor is rated as ‘very low’ (note – a rating of ‘very low’ does not preclude the potential for a catastrophic impact from a rogue comet or asteroid – potential buyers are advised to confirm the planet’s GCRF as part of their own, independent survey).
Structurally, the planet is built around a solid iron-nickel alloy core of approximately 1,200 kilometres diameter, surrounded by a liquid iron-nickel outer core. A large magma layer of molten rock and dissolved crystals and gases is encased in a standard outer crust of between 5 and 50 kilometres thick (note – outer crust thickness may vary and some areas remain prone to subsidence due to unsecured tectonic plates).
The planet’s surface is decorated to a high standard with a number of different land-masses of varying sizes set within a large and extensive planetary water-feature. On these different land-masses, the present owner has integrated different landforms and terrains with both global and micro-climates to create an extraordinary array of habitats for the wide variety of life-forms with which the present owner has populated the planet. (note – whilst the sale includes all indigenous life-forms, some species identified in previous surveys may no longer be present).
The planet is offered on either a residential or commercial basis.

Residential options include:

  • the creation of an exclusive private retreat for class J (super-massive) life-forms making use, for recreational purposes, of the presence of vast expanses of water, large polar regions of guaranteed snow and ice and extensive beaches with year-round sun (note – atmospheric density is not uniform and decreases with altitude, so a life- form height limit will apply);
  • the colonisation of Earth as a second-home planet for an expanding civilisation;
  • the re-location of a life-form from a current home planet that is facing destruction from a local supernova, black-hole or local galactic infrastructure development.
Commercial options include:

  • leisure - the exploitation for leisure purposes of the planet’s relatively benign climate, spectacular scenery, wide variety of interesting indigenous species and significant potential for activity-based recreation;
  • resource extraction – previous surveys have confirmed that the crust of the planet contains large deposits of silicon, aluminium, iron, sodium, potassium, chlorine, sulphur and titanium, as well as smaller quantities of boron, uranium, gold, silver, mercury, selenium and palladium (please note – previously estimated quantities of fossil fuels may have been recently depleted);
  • farming (arable or livestock) – whilst, at present, only 40% of the planet’s land-mass is used for the production of foodstuffs, it is estimated that, with some investment in land-mass re-structuring and improved irrigation of water-stressed areas, this could be increased to 85%. The installation of a global weather management system could further increase yields, and planning permission has been granted for the installation of a Rotational Axis Variation System, thus eliminating seasonal sunlight variation and associated weather extremes, and further enhancing potentials yields.
Also included in the offer is the planet’s single orbiting satellite (current designation ‘Moon’). Currently undeveloped and without atmosphere, this satellite, with an equatorial circumference of 10,920 kilometres, is in synchronous rotation with the Earth at a distance of between 356,400 and 406,700 kilometres (note - there are no planning restrictions in relation to this body and potential removal is an option; however, it is recommended that a full Potential Impact Survey is conducted before any major structural changes are undertaken). This satellite may provide useful additional storage, parking for several inter-galactic cruisers, or has the potential for conversion into a ‘Granny Flat’ or sublet.

To express your interest in the possible purchase of this planet, or to arrange a viewing, please contact one of our sales officers by the usual channels, quoting ‘Earth1’. We will be only too pleased to help you.

Notes:

  1. This is the Earth ‘English language’ version of the Notice of Sale – other languages available on request;
  2. All values expressed in local units – conversion factors available on request;
  3. All data correct at time of publication;
  4. All data based on the most recent independent planetary survey conducted by the Office for Intergalactic Affairs - copy available on request;
  5. Moff, Cavil, Cotto and Associates are regulated by the Universal Property Purveyors Authority. Registration No. 045-012-345089
  6. Due to the present owner’s prolonged absence from the property over the last few millennia, the planet has developed an infestation of humanoid life-forms with a primitive industrial culture; however, the owner is willing to cover the costs of the removal of this infestation if the purchaser so desires.

Okay, So It's Shameless Self-Promotion!

The extremely diverse nature of the subjects on which I comment (politics, sport, religion, topical news, neighbours who are pillocks) has inevitably resulted in a very diverse group of simply stunning people who do me the honour of taking time out of their own, equally crazy existences to read my inane ramblings. Just remember, you are the best!
However, having such a diverse following presents its own problems - take today for example. I wanted to post an image along with this particular blog entry that would instantly catch people's attention…and yes, I have to admit, I was going to post Image 2 below…okay, I know it's sexist and could be construed as cheap titillation and debasing to women, but I just liked it because it was an example of utter ridiculousness, like a mankini…but without the man…
Anyway, I decided (somewhat against my nature, I must admit) that I needed to take more cognisance of the potential offence that images like two scantily-clad females in utterly bizarre almost-clothing could cause. That's why I decided to front this particular post (the actual content of which, I might add, has nothing at all to do with either image) with a cute kitten…because everyone likes a cute kitten (apparently!)

Image 2
Okay, so now that either the cute little kitten or the truly disturbing female attire (which one of my friends suggested was 'just asking for an infection') has engaged you in this post, I can reveal the true purpose of today's ramblings - it's a shallow, some may think almost desperate attempt to remind you fabulous people that on the right hand side of the screen are links to what some readers genuinely believe are four pretty decent books written by my own fair hand…okay, not the one at the top, admittedly, because it doesn't look like anyone has actually read 'God, Aliens, Death & Teapots', even though it contains a story about a dog apocalypse, and one about how the Earth will ultimately deal with the threat of climate change…yeah, I know,  topical eh? There's some pretty deep philosophical shit in there which, if it'd been written by someone like Margaret Atwood, would undoubtedly have won a bucketload of awards by now…not that I'm bitter…
Moving on...
The other three books that can be accessed by just clicking on the colourful covers - Parts 1, 2 & 3 of The Book That THEY Do Nt Want You To Read - well, almost without exception on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com and Goodreads.com they've had very positive reviews (I say almost - it would have been nice to know what it was about Book 1 that Simon didn't like on Goodreads (he only gave it 2 stars), but as there was no written review, I guess I'll never know. By the way, rumours that I've had him 'whacked' are simply untrue!).
The most recent review of one of my books was from a fabulous individual in Oxnard, California:

Unprompted positivity - it really is the best!

So, dear blog readers, if you're stuck for something to read on your Kindle (other e-readers are available) this summer and want to be amused, amazed and disturbed all at the same time, then can I suggest you give The Book That THEY Do Not Want You To Read a look…I reckon that if everyone who followed this blog in the US bought a copy TODAY, NOW, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, I'd be able to make it into the top 100, which would be a real boost for my ego…!

However, if you prefer your literary enjoyment to come in small, bite-size morsels, check out 'God, Aliens, Death & Teapots' which, from my publishers (Autharium) website is FREE, but is also available from Amazon at the very reasonable price of $3.49, £1.99, 199 Yen, CDN$2.99 or €2,68. Please note that has already made it to No.8 in the Sci-fi bestseller list…in Spain…because my friend Javier bought a copy...

There, shameless plug for my books all done - thanks for sticking with it :)
Tomorrow, I'll be back to taking the piss out of something or someone!

Damn those Fates. It's FREE!!!!!

Download it FREE from here!

It appears that the Fates (whose heads I'm going to smash in with a lump hammer next time I see them) are hell-bent on preventing me from offering my stunning collection of short stories - God, Aliens, Death & Teapots - to the great reading public, free of charge.
Not only is Amazon insisting on charging £1.99 for it (even though it's available from my uber-cool publishers at £0.00), an unexplained glitch on Autharium's own website meant that even though it was available from them for free, it wasn't actually possible to download it!
That would explain why 'sales' of what has to be (even though I say so myself) an incredibly imaginative, witty and thought-provoking septet of mini-literary masterpieces, have been so disappointingly low :(

But not anymore, folks - the problem's fixed!
Yee-Haa!!

Download it FREE from here!

And if that wasn't enough, there's a big virtual hug, sloppy kiss, or hearty shake of the hand from me to anyone who clicks the download button - all you need to do is indicate your preference as a comment at the end of this post :)

And if that still wasn't enough, I've included the first few paragraphs from one of the stories to pique your interest and get you racing to part with absolutely none of your money, at all, whatsoever - this one's entitled:

Why Do Pandas Look So Sad?

 I never really thought much about pandas before it happened. To me, they were just large, cuddly, bear-like creatures that spent most of their time sitting around, chewing on bamboo shoots and struggling to get laid. I only ever once saw one in real life, and that was when I took my children to the zoo one holiday whilst my wife was working away. As my eldest daughter, Alice, read aloud the words on the colourful information board:
‘...only 1,600 left in the wild...’
‘...confined to the mountains of western China...’
‘...shrinking habitat...’
‘...facing extinction...’
I hoisted my youngest up onto my shoulders so she could get a better view of the animal. Together, we watched as, true to form, it was sitting in the centre of its enclosure on a small mound of earth, munching on a pile of bamboo shoots. That was virtually all it did. Occasionally, it did seem to pause for a moment, as if it had thought of something; but then it would commence its munching again, looking vacantly ahead. Just once, it did stop eating completely, putting aside the bamboo and casting its gaze around its enclosure. It stared for a while in our general direction. Then, it gathered up more bamboo shoots, looked away and began eating again. Not once, in the seven or eight minutes that we were standing there watching it, did it make any effort to move from where it was sitting.
To me, the thing just looked bored.
But, Louisa; well, she saw something else.
‘Why do pandas look so sad?’
At the time, the question hardly registered because Alice had finished reading the information board and had announced that she now wanted to move on and look at the giraffes and then the lions and then the hippos. As a result of this distraction, I’m not sure I ever answered Lou’s question; if I did, I can’t remember what it was I said.
But if my darling little daughter were able to ask me that very same question now (and how I wish to God that she could), the answer I could give her would, I’m sure, bring tears to those bright blue eyes of hers, just as the mere thought of it now brings tears to my own.

 Looking back, I guess we would really like to call it an invasion. That would at least suggest there was an intention to occupy, to subjugate, perhaps eventually to exterminate; and that would in turn suggest that we, the human race, had been a consideration. But the truth of the matter is that we were probably worthy of no more than a passing thought; that to them, we were, all seven billion of us, creatures of...
It took me quite some time (and Christ knows I’ve had plenty of that) to figure out the word that best describes how I think mankind was regarded:
That word is INCONSEQUENTIAL.
To them, we were creatures of inconsequence, no more a part of their thinking as earthworms and woodlice and beetles are to a man in an excavator loading giant mounds of earth into trucks.
No, this was never an invasion.
It was...asset-stripping.
Nothing more, nothing less.

God, Aliens, Death & Teapots (published)

It's very, very pleasing that my 100th post on this blog should celebrate another of my literary creations being published.
Here it is:
A mix of seven short stories (some really short, some quite a bit longer, all of them awesome!).
And what's more, I'm benevolently making this available to my adoring fans for absolutely nothing - zilch - nada - zero.
Yes, that's right, it's FREE!
But what's this? I hear some cries of bewilderment from the capitalist cheap-seats - has Andy lost his mind?
Fear not, dear friends, there is a cunningness about this plan, for secreted at the end of those seven stories (which are all f**king excellent by the way) is an excerpt from 'The Book That THEY…'
Sighs of relief and appreciative nods may commence.
Of course I haven't lost my marbles. 'Tis but a clever marketing ploy to try to bolster the sales of 'The Book That THEY…' so that it creeps over the 100 sold mark (a psychological barrier indeed).
So, to all those fantastic people out there in Readerland who have been so kind as to take interest in this blog - download your copy now - from here: Download free for your Kindle from Autharium
It should be available on Amazon soon and it's already up on Goodreads, expectantly awaiting a rush of glowing reviews.
ENJOY!!

God, Aliens, Death & Teapots

That's right, folks.
Today I finally got round to finishing the proof-reading and last-minute re-writes of the seven stories that have gone into the little anthology of short stories that is God, Aliens, Death & Teapots.

God, Aliens, Death & Teapots - out for comment.

Okay, so I am hoping to use this as a crude marketing tool for the much beefier 'The Book That THEY…' by surreptitiously sticking a short extract from my uber-fantastic (even if I do say so myself) debut novel, but who cares?
It also gets what I think are a set of really quite good little tales out there in the wider world, and that can't be a bad thing, can it?
Of course not.
I think I'll give it a week or so and then look to see if I can get the book published for real.

If anyone wants to download and let me know what they think (the link is above), all comments would be gratefully received!
